Scholarship Winners Announced

Hilltown Community Health CenterNews

Hilltown Community Health Centers’ (HCHC) Annual meeting was held on June 1st. A tradition each year is to announce the Peg Broderick Scholarship recipient. The Peg Broderick Scholarship was set up by Peg’s family after her battle with breast cancer in 1989 and is given to a Hilltown student pursuing a career in the medical field. Peg was a nurse at the Worthington Health Center and a wonderful friend and co-worker. This year there were a number of extremely qualified candidates for the scholarship and the scholarship committee chose two recipients for the award; a first for the committee in 27 years.

This year’s scholarship winners are Alysha Langdon and Paige Borden.  Alysha is a resident of Worthington and graduated from Gateway Regional in 2009. She currently attends Berkshire Community College and is working as an LPN. She plans to pursue her RN degree and license. Paige is a Cummington resident and a 2016 graduate of Smith Vocational High School. She’ll be attending Fitchburg State University in the fall in the nursing program. She plans to become a nurse practitioner specializing in labor in delivery.

Hilltown Community Health Center also gave out a one-time scholarship this year with the help of the Peg Broderick Scholarship Committee. The scholarship was in memory of Lucille Temple who passed away in 2015. Lucille was a long-time resident of Cummington and throughout her life she was devoted to the community and to nursing. She was an original staff member and supervisor for the Northampton Visiting Nurses Association and later a nurse and President of the Board of Directors for the Worthington Health Center.  Lucille’s family named the health center as the beneficiary of her memorial gifts, and with those gifts HCHC was pleased to create the scholarship in her honor.   She was a role model for many, and we know that the recipient will serve her community with the passion and commitment that Lucille embodied.

The recipient of this year’s award is Katlyn Rowe of Worthington. She was a 2010 graduate of Gateway Regional, a 2014 graduate of Bay Path University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology. She will attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences this fall to begin a 3 year program to earn her Masters as a physician’s assistant. Congratulations to these young women!
